Herons fall at #10 'Jackets in league opener

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The University of Rochester, ranked 10th in the latest NFHCA poll, remained undefeated with a 5-0 win over William Smith College on its home field this evening.

The Yellowjackets (8-0, 1-0) scored less than six minutes into the match and never looked back. Colleen Maillie netted what proved to be the only goal needed on the night, converting on a penalty corner off an assist from Lauren Sharpe. Nancy Bansbach recorded her team-leading ninth goal of the season about 12 minutes later, giving Rochester a 2-0 lead. She assisted on another goal about five minutes before halftime and tacked on a second assist late in the second half for a four-point game.

William Smith (3-4, 0-1) had its best chance to break up the shutout with under 12 minutes remaining. Kelsey Pierce fired a shot from the left slot, but goalkeeper Kate Kujawa made the save.

Sophomore Alexandra DeVito recorded five saves in goal for the Herons.

William Smith will remain on the road for its next match, stepping away from conference play to tangle with No. 20 Cortland on Saturday, Sept. 22. That contest will begin at 2 p.m.
