Morrison’s huge 2nd quarter keys Heron victory

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—William Smith College senior Mia Morrison outscored Bard College 19-10 in the second quarter to lead the Herons to an 85-54 win over the Raptors. The forward finished the Liberty League women's basketball contest with a double-double on 27 points and 10 rebounds.

Morrison shot 10-of-19 from the floor, making 1-of-2 from beyond the arc, and went 6-of-8 at the free throw line. On the glass, she split her work evenly between offense and defense, grabbing five carom on each end. It was her third straight double-double and sixth of the season.

William Smith led 17-16 after 10 minutes of play, but Morrison and the Herons dominated the second quarter. After missing her first four shots from the floor and scoring just a single point in the first quarter, Morrison made her next five shots and was 8-of-10 shooting in the second quarter. First-year Stella Davis added two of her three 3-pointers on the night during a quarter that saw William Smith outscore Bard 30-10 on the way to a 21-point halftime lead.

Morrison played just eight minutes in the second half, but the Herons still controlled the paint thanks to the efforts of first-year forward Amy Dooley. She scored 10 of her season-high matching 14 points after halftime.

All 10 Herons that entered the game grabbed at least one rebound. In addition to Morrison, sophomores Kyesha Talerico and Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou contributed nine and seven boards, respectively. William Smith more than doubled up Bard on the glass, outrebounding the home team 51-25.

Sophomore Juliana Gamboa finished the night with a game-high six assists while first-year Christina Mitrow added four helpers.

The Herons (7-5, 3-3) shot a season-high .508 from the floor and a season-high .421 from beyond the arc. William Smith held Bard (4-6, 0-5) to .317 shoot

Raptor first-year Christina Kiser posted team-highs of 23 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists.

William Smith is back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 12, when the Herons continue Liberty League play at Skidmore (4-9, 3-3). Tipoff in Saratoga Springs is scheduled for 2 p.m.
