Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team used smothering team defense and a lopsided advantage on the glass to post a 71-47 Liberty League victory at Skidmore College this afternoon. The Herons limited the Thoroughbreds to 28.6 percent shooting and enjoyed a 52-35 rebounding edge.
William Smith (8-5, 4-3) wasted no time seizing control of the contest, jumping out to an 11-2 lead from the opening tip. The Herons made four of their first seven shots while Skidmore (4-10, 3-4) sank just 1-of-4. By the end of the opening frame, William Smith led 18-7. The Herons stretched their lead to 15 by halftime and possessed a double digit lead throughout the second half.
William Smith's work on the boards resulted in a 22-6 edge in second chance points and, despite committing eight more turnovers, the Herons still managed an 18-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
Offensively, William Smith shot 40.6 percent from the floor, including 47.6 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.
Senior forward
Mia Morrison recorded her fourth consecutive double-double on a season-high 30 points and 10 rebounds. She was 11-of-15 from the floor with three 3-pointers. Morrison's point total is tied for 18th on William Smith's single game list. Sophomore guard
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Junior guard
Annaliese Schreder chipped in eight points. Sophomore guard
Juliana Gamboa contributed seven points, six boards, and a game-high five assists. Senior forward
Olivia Hughes collected nine caroms.
Jessica Centore had a team-high 12 points for the Thoroughbreds while Haley English logged 11 points. No other Skidmore player had more than five points.
William Smith returns to Bristol Gym on Friday, Jan. 18, when the Herons host Clarkson. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
