Herons roll past Monarchs 9-0

GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team erupted for six goals in the third period as it rolled to a 9-0 win over King's in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this evening. With the win, the Herons improve to 11-3-0 overall and 9-0-0 in conference play.
 
Sophomore forward Julia Mings led the way for the Herons pocketing four goals, a William Smith single-game record. She added an assist to finish the game with five points. Senior forward Stephanie Hampton (3a), sophomore forward Jules Kennedy (1g, 2a), and first-year Abbey Luth (2g, 1a) all had three points. Sophomore Olivia Williams made eight saves as she recorded her third shutout of the season. Kiva Sierra Stoltz and Emma Zeveney split time in goal for King's (1-13-0, 0-9-0). Stoltz made 23 saves while Zeveney made 33 saves. The Monarchs rotated the duo throughout the contest.
 
Mings opened the scoring at the 16:49 mark of the first period. She picked up a loose puck in the slot and wristed it into the back of the net. Senior Maura Mulligan and Hampton were credited with assists on the goal. William Smith piled the pressure on in the opening period, outshooting the Monarch's 21-3.
 
The Herons doubled their lead when Mings collected her second goal of the game five minutes into the second period. Hampton sent a breakout pass to Mings in the neutral zone. Mings split a pair of defenders and slipped a backhand between the goalie's legs. Senior Laura Rollins was credited with a secondary assist on the goal. Just under four minutes later, senior Jordan Roezter made it 3-0 with a power-play goal. Mings and sophomore Emily Martino were credited with assists on the goal. Mings had her shot from the slot turned aside. Roetzer pounced on the loose puck and poked it across the goal line. It was Roetzer's sixth goal of the season.  
 
Luth made it a four goal game 59 seconds into the third period. She banged home a rebound for her 12th goal of the season. Junior Gina Scibetta and Kennedy were credited with assists on the goal. Luth's tally broke William Smith's rookie scoring record. Krista Federow '18 had 11 goals during the 2014-15 season. Mings completed the hat trick at the 4:16 mark of the third period. Mings' 10th goal of the season was assisted by Hampton and Mulligan. Two minutes later, Luth notched her 13th goal of the season. Kennedy and Klimaszewski were credited with assists on the power-play goal. Luth's second goal of the game gave her 20 points on the season, breaking Federow's record of 19 set during the 14-15 season. It also set the Herons' single-season record for goals. Federow had 12 in 2015-16 and 2017-18.
 
Mings' fourth goal of the game gave William Smith a 7-0 lead. Rollins was credited with an assist on the goal. Kennedy and Emily Martino added goals late in the period. Kennedy's 10th goal of the season was assisted by Luth and first-year Anna Krajewski. Martino's fourth goal of the season was assisted by Roetzer and Marykate Martino.
 
William Smith finished the game with a 65-8 edge in shots on goal. The Herons were 2-for-5 on the power-play while King's was 0-for-3 with the extra attacker. William Smith has killed off 17 consecutive penalties.
 
The teams will conclude the season series tomorrow afternoon.
