Statesmen down Huskies 5-2

PORTLAND, Maine-The Hobart College hockey team defeated the University of Southern Maine 5-2 in a New England College Hockey Conference contest at the USM Ice Arena this afternoon. With the win, The Statesmen are now 14-6-1 overall and 8-5-1 in conference play.
 
First-year PA Martineau (2g), sophomore Ryan Lynch (1g, 1a) and junior Will Harrison (1g, 1a) each had a game-high two points in the victory. Junior Alexander Connal made 10 saves as he collected his seventh victory of the season. Brendan Dowler and Parker Sanderson scored for the Huskies (3-15-3, 3-11-1). Anthony D'Aloisio made 36 saves in 60 minutes of action.
 
Hobart jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period after carrying a majority of the play in the opening 20 minutes. The Statesmen outshot the Huskies 12-1 in the first period. First-year Zach Tyson opened the scoring at the 13:29 mark with his fifth goal of the season. He picked up a rebound in front of D'Alosio and flipped it into the back of the net. First-year Aaron Maguyon and junior Travis Schneider were credited with assists on the goal. Just under five minutes later, Harrison scored his eighth goal of the year. Lynch was credited with an assist on the goal.
 
Martineau scored what would prove to be the game winner at the 4:20 mark of the second period. Sophomores Mark Benemerito and Alec Robitaille set up Martineau's fourth goal of the season.
 
Dowler's first goal of the season broke up the shutout bid. Ethan Bassile was credited with an assist on the goal.
 
Hobart regained a three goal lead 60 seconds later. Lynch collected a pass from Harrison in the right faceoff circle and one-timed a shot past D'Aloision. Senior Brandon Bistodeau was credited with a secondary assist on Lynch's fourth goal of the season.
 
Sanderson's second goal of the season made it 4-2 as the teams went into the second intermission. Tyler Mathieu were credited with assists on the goal.
 
Martineau's fifth goal of the season at the 1:37 mark of the third period iced the game for the Statesmen. He broke into the offensive zone and wristed a shot from the slot into back of the net.
 
Hobart finished the game with a 41-12 edge in shots on goal. Neither team was able to convert on the power play. The Statesmen were 0-for-4 with the man advantage and the Huskies were 0-for-2 with the extra attacker.
 
Hobart will be back in action next weekend, Feb. 1-2, when it begins a four-game home stand to conclude the regular season. The Statesmen will take on Babson on Friday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m., before UMass Boston comes to town on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 4 p.m.
