Wodka’s OT goal lifts William Smith over St. Lawrence

GENEVA, N.Y. —The William Smith College field hockey team recorded a win over St. Lawrence 3-2 on McCooey Field this afternoon. First-year Mackenzie Wodka scored in overtime, helping the Herons improve to 4-7 overall, and 1-2 in the Liberty League. The Saints fell to 3-9 overall, and 0-3 in conference play.

With three minutes left in overtime play, junior Sophie Craig received the ball as soon as she subbed into the game. Craig saw Wodka across the field, and wacked a pass through the St. Lawrence defense. Wodka raced past Delaney Yates, and fired off a shot past Sydney Giacin to win the game.

William Smith scored their first goal when Wodka drew a penalty stroke. Senior Kelsey Pierce took the stroke, and put it past Giacin to score her second goal this season, and give the Herons a 1-0 lead.  Towards the end of the second half, Mckenzie Haberl raced down the field and slotted the ball through junior Alexandra DeVito's legs to tie the game 1-1.

In the third quarter, first-year Lauren Jackson inserted a penalty corner for the Herons. First-year Kate Barilla was at the top of the arc and passed the ball to Wodka, who scored when she rattled off a high shot into the left corner of the goal. Wodka leads William Smith with 12 points (4g,4a). Mckenzie Haberl recorded her second goal of the game off a pass from Isabel Thompson in the fourth quarter.

The Saints outshot the Herons 17-11, and had a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners.

Senior Bennett Tierney highlighted the Heron defense, recording two defensive saves. DeVito made seven saves for the win, and Giacin stopped four shots.

The Herons will be back in action next Friday, Oct. 18 when they travel to Vassar for a Liberty League game at 4 p.m.
