TROY, N.Y.-The Hobart College soccer team was defeated by Rensselaer 3-1 in a Liberty League game at ECAV Stadium this afternoon. The Statesmen are now 9-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in Liberty League play while the Engineers, who were ranked ninth in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, improve to 12-1-1 overall and 4-0-1 in conference play.
 
Hobart had the first scoring chance of the game in the 13th minute off of a free kick, but junior 
August Martini's shot that was ticketed for the bottom right corner of the cage was turned aside by Luke Brezek.
 
RPI opened the scoring in 25th minute when Josh Gaudiano stepped up and buried a penalty kick into the right corner of the cage for his 13th goal of the season.
 
Junior 
Juan Widoycovich nearly scored the equalizer three minutes later but his shot was turned aside by Brezek. In the 42nd minute, senior 
Binjo Emmanuel had a shot from the top of the 18-yard box blocked by an Engineer defender. The Statesmen ended the first half with a 7-4 edge in shots.
 
RPI turned up the pressure coming out of the halftime break, finishing with a 12-4 edge in shots in the second half. Gaudiano struck again in the 62nd minute, collecting his Liberty League leading 14th goal of the season. Arik Duncan was credited with an assist on the goal.
 
Widoycovich cut the deficit to 2-1 with his third goal of the season. In the 73rd minute, he collected a loose ball and blasted a shot from 20 yards into the lower left corner of the cage.
 
Austin Betterly sealed the game with a goal in the 83rd minute. He collected a pass from Gaudiano and slid a shot past a diving Salazar and into the back of the net. It was Betterly's second goal of the season.
 
The Engineers finished the game with a 16-11 edge in shots and both teams had five corner kicks.
 
Salazar recorded three saves in 90 minutes of action for Hobart. At the opposite end of the pitch, Brezek also made three saves.
 
The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 19, when they travel to take on Union. The game in Schenectady, N.Y., is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
