#3 Herons blank Dutchwomen, win 7th straight

GENEVA, N.Y.-The third-ranked William Smith College soccer team bested Union 1-0 in a Liberty League contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With their seventh straight win, the Herons improve to 11-1-1 overall and 7-0-0 in conference play. The win clinched a spot in the Liberty League's six team tournament field.

Junior Julia Keogh scored the game's lone goal in the ninth minute. Her first goal of the season was assisted by junior Sheila McQuillen. McQuillen collected a loose ball near midfield and sent Keogh in on goal with a perfectly timed through ball. Keogh broke into the 18-yard box and slid a shot into the lower right corner of the cage.

William Smith peppered the Dutchwomen defense from opening whistle and finished the first half with a 15-0 edge in shots. Junior Amanda Adams had the game's first scoring opportunity in the sixth minute but her shot was smothered by Alison Sorkenn. In the first half, senior Emilie Sauvayre had three scoring chances from point blank range that were stopped by Sorkenn.

The Herons nearly doubled their lead 61 seconds into the second half but junior Mariah Deschino's shot from the top of the box was barely kept off the line by Sorkenn. In the 60th minute, Junior Maialen Martinez had a header swiped off the line by a Union defender.

Union (7-6-0, 2-4-0) mounted its best offensive chance in the final five minutes of the game off a corner kick but could not poke the loose ball across the goal line.

William Smith finished the game with a 24-2 edge in shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore Amanda Kesler played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save as she notched her eighth shutout of the season. Alison Sorkenn made eight saves in goal for the Dutchwomen.

The Herons will be back in action next Saturday, Oct. 26, when they begin a three-game road trip. William Smith will take on Bard on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m. and Mount St. Mary College on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.
