Herons fall 1-0 to Ithaca

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team lost 1-0 to Ithaca this evening on McCooey field. The Herons fell to 5-9 overall, and 2-4 in Liberty League play. The Bombers improved to 10-6 overall, and 5-1 in conference play.
 
William Smith led 14-9 in shots, and 8-5 in penalty corners. Senior Bennett Tierney held the Bombers to one goal when she made a defensive save in the third quarter.
 
Ithaca scored 21 minutes into the first half, when Morgan Mullen got her stick on a loose ball, and scored her 13th career goal.
 
The Herons ended the first quarter strong, recording four shots, and three penalty corners. William Smith held the Bombers to one shot in the first quarter.
 
In the second quarter, Ithaca had a series of shots that led to Mullen's goal. The Herons were unable to break through the Bombers defense, and were held to zero shots.
 
First-year Mackenzie Wodka took the first shot of the third quarter, and then the Herons were awarded a penalty corner. First-year Kate Barilla had a shot on goal, but Meghana Caron stopped the shot and was credited with a defensive save. The Herons got four more shots off in five minutes, but were unable to find the back of the net.
 
Ithaca took one shot in the third quarter. Tierney was positioned near the left post, and stopped Mullen's shot for a defensive save. The Herons started the fourth quarter off with a penalty corner, and three shots followed. Ithaca countered with two shots, but junior Alexandra DeVito saved both. The Herons pulled DeVito out of net with 50 seconds remaining in the game, but William Smith did not have any offensive opportunities.
 
DeVito made four saves, and Savanna Lenker stopped the ball six times for the win.
 
The Herons will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 27, when they travel to Schenectady, N.Y. to face Union. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
