Game Recap: William Smith Field Hockey | | Amanda Zumpano

Union tops William Smith 2-0

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team lost 2-0 to Union this afternoon at Frank Bailey Field. The Herons wrap up Liberty League play with a 2-5 record, and the Dutchwomen end conference play with a 2-5 record as well.

Sarah Wilkinson and Charlotte Leyland notched goals for Union in the second half.

William Smith's defense was able to hold Union to zero goals after they rattled off five shots in the first quarter. The Herons were unable to get through the Dutchwomen's defense to get a shot off. In the second quarter, Union continued to prevent the Heron offense from producing a shot, but senior Emma Honey was able to rattle off one late in the quarter.

Union started off the third quarter with three penalty corner opportunities. The Dutchwomen scored the first goal of the game when Wilkerson tipped in a pass from Cici Lyne.

With three minutes left in the game, Laura Wind had possession of the ball off a turnover, and fired a pass to Leyland. Leyland found the back of the cage to increase Union's lead to 2-0. After the goal, the Herons pulled junior Alexandra DeVito out of net, and subbed in junior Sophie Craig for an extra field player. Sophomore McKenna Williams took a shot after a penalty corner, but it was blocked by the Dutchwomen.

Union led 13-4 in shots and 7-2 in penalty corners. DeVito stopped the ball five times, and Heather Poisson made two saves for the win.

The Herons will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 2, when they travel to Grantham Pa. to take on No. 12 Messiah. The game is scheduled to begin at noon.
