Hobart wins 3rd Liberty League Championship

TROY, N.Y. — The Hobart College soccer team defeated Clarkson 2-1 to capture the 2019 Liberty League Tournament title today on ECAV Field. It's the third time the Statesmen have won the tournament championship.

Hobart earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The last time the Statesmen made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament was in 2017.

Hobart is now 14-4-2. The Statesmen took a 2-1 lead in the 76th minute when junior Pete Critchlow served a corner kick into the six. Clarkson mistakenly headed the ball into the goal, and gave Hobart the lead. In the 63rd minute, Hobart tied the game 1-1 when senior Nick Wigglesworth launched the ball from the 50-yard line. Senior Kyle Patrick one touched a bouncing ball and fired it into the back of the net for his sixth career goal. Patrick earned the Liberty League Tournament's Most Outstanding Player award for scoring twice on the weekend.

In the 27th minute, Clarkson took a 1-0 lead on a free kick opportunity. Bobby Guilfoil took the free kick five yards outside the 18, and placed his shot right under the crossbar.

The Golden Knights finished the season 11-5-4. Ian Roeloffs made two saves in net for Clarkson, and senior Brian Salazar stopped five shots for the win.

The Golden Knights almost had a goal two minutes into the game when Michael Lanfear ripped a shot and hit the right post. Four minutes later, Hobart countered when Patrick took a shot that went just left of the goal. The Statesmen continued to shoot, and junior August Martini fired a shot that hit the right post. Clarkson started to put pressure on Salazar, putting three shots on net. Shortly after, Guilfoil scored. With less than a minute in the first half, senior Jack Bizub broke free from the Golden Knight's defense and went one-on-one with Roeloffs. Roeloffs got a piece of the ball and blocked Bizub's shot.

Clarkson continue to shoot going into the second half, starting off with three shots. Cam Emde-Gerdine put a shot on net but Salazar was there to make the save. Hobart immediately reversed the momentum when Wigglesworth fed the ball up to Patrick to tie the game. Hobart's corner kick in the 75th minute secured the win for the Statesmen. Clarkson ended the half with two corner kicks. The Golden Knights almost tied the game on the second corner with two minutes left when the ball skirted across the goal line. The Statesmen were able to clear it and win the Liberty League title match.

Hobart had a 13-12 edge in shots, and tied the Golden Knights 6-6 in corner kicks.
