Herons run away with Greene Classic title

LANCASTER, Pa.—The William Smith College basketball team cruised to a 59-39 win over Wilkes University in the championship game of the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic hosted by Franklin & Marshall College. Tournament MVP Lauren DeVaney paced the Herons with game-highs of 18 points and eight rebounds.

DeVaney was 6-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. She was joined in double figures by junior Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou, who scored 11 points, grabbed seven boards and recorded a game-high four assists. She was named to the All-Tournament team. Sophomore Stella Davis contributed eight points, six rebounds and a game-high three steals.

From the opening basket by Olivia Parisi until the final buzzer sounded, William Smith held the lead throughout the contest. The Herons (2-1) led by as many as nine in the first quarter, carrying an 18-9 lead into the second quarter.

Wilkes cut the William Smith lead to six with a 3-pointer to start the second quarter scoring, but the Herons responded with eight straight points to push their advantage back into double digits for good. First-year Isabella Mitrow scored the final three points of the first half to send William Smith into the break with a 35-16 lead.

The Colonels (2-1) were unable to mount a serious challenge to the Heron lead in the second half. William Smith outscored Wilkes 14-6 in the third quarter, stretching its advantage to 49-22.

The Herons shot 35 percent from the floor with eight 3-pointers, including three by Dimitrakopoulou. William Smith made five more free throws (13) than the Colonels attempted (8). The Herons also controlled the glass, outrebounding Wilkes 48-39.

The Colonels were led by Brianna Horton's eight point, five rebounds and three steals.

William Smith returns to the court at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, when the Herons visit Brockport.
