Walsh nets OT goal, Statesmen defeat Saints 1-0

GENEVA, NY. —Hobart College junior Kyle Walsh scored his first career goal to send the Statesmen past St. Lawrence 1-0 in overtime. The Statesmen improve to 13-4-1 overall, and 6-2-1 in Liberty League play. Hobart will enter the Liberty League Tournament as the No. 2 seed.

Walsh's goal eight minutes and 13 seconds into the overtime period secured the victory for the Statesmen. Junior August Martini took a corner kick, and placed a perfect ball for Walsh to head into the net for the win.

Hobart played a man down for the last 28 minutes of the game, when junior Pete Critchlow was issued a red card with 20 minutes left in regulation.

The Saints (6-8-1) outshot the Statesmen 5-3 in the first half, but Hobart had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Kyle Mangold recorded the first shot of the game, but it went high over the goal. St. Lawrence had a scoring chance with six minutes left in the first half, but senior goalkeeper Brian Salazar made the save.

In the second half, senior Nate Cary almost found the back of the net 73 minutes in, but his shot was stopped by Ben Woelfinger. The Saints countered, firing off a shot two minutes later, but Salazar was able to make the stop. The Statesmen had to play a man down 78 minutes in when Critchlow was issued a red card. Hobart didn't let this stop them, and sophomore Charlie Widing took a shot, but placed it too high. The Statesmen defense didn't let the Saints take advantage of their extra man opportunity, and limited St. Lawrence to one shot in the remainder of regulation play.

Two minutes into overtime play, senior Binjo Emmanuel fired off a shot, but was unable to keep it on net. The Saints countered with a corner kick and a shot, but still couldn't get anything past Salazar. The Statesmen took advantage of their next penalty corner when Martini connected with Walsh to win the game.

The Statesmen finished the game with a 12-9 edge in shots and an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Salazar played all 98:13, and made two saves as he earned his sixth shutout of the season. Woelfinger played all 98:13 and made two saves.

Hobart will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 9, when they travel to Troy, N.Y. to play in the Liberty League Tournament semifinals. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
