GENEVA, N.Y.—Junior
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou matched her career-high with 25 points, but the University of Rochester topped William Smith College 85-73 in Bristol Gymnasium tonight. The Yellowjackets made a program record 14 3-pointers on the night.
Rochester (4-3) shot 50 percent from long range and 85 percent at the free throw line on the night. First-year Hannah Lindemuth scored 23 points, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, to pace the visitors. Senior Lauren Foley added 21 points, including 6-of-8 from deep. First-year Alex Sestric chipped in 16 points, with four 3-pointers and sophomore Julianna Okoniewski scored 12 points.
Dimitrakopoulou was 10-of-19 shooting with five 3-pointers. Sophomores
Olivia Parisi and
Stella Davis netted 18 points and 13 points, respectively. First-year
Lauren DeVaney contributed her first collegiate double-double on 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. The Herons shot 42 percent from the floor, 40 percent from 3-point range and 69 percent at the line.
William Smith (3-2) built its largest lead of the game with an 8-2 burst in the middle of the opening quarter. Dimitrakopoulou's 3-pointer at the 5:45 mark, gave the Herons a 16-9 lead. Rochester countered with 10 straight points to take their first lead of the night. Lindemuth powered the run with eight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers. The Yellowjackets led 22-21 at the end of the first quarter.
Rochester sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around a triple by Davis for a 28-24 lead. After Davis hit her third 3 of the half to put William Smith up 36-33 with about three minutes to go to halftime, the Yellowjackets scored the final seven points of the half to go into the break with a 40-36 lead.
Davis led all scorers with 13 points at halftime.
The game remained tight through the third quarter. William Smith trailed by as many as five points, but Dimitrakopoulou scored five straight points to tie the game for the seventh and final time at 45. Lindemuth made a 3-pointer just before the end of the quarter, to give UR a 59-54 lead.
Rochester broke the game open with a 10-4 run in the middle of the final frame. Junior Tessa Ludwick scored six of her eight points in the game during the surge that stretched the Yellowjacket lead to 75-65. It was a two-possession game with just under two minutes to go, but the Herons weren't able to gain any ground as Rochester went 6-for-6 at the free throw line down the stretch.
William Smith will return to action Friday, Dec. 6, when the Herons begin Liberty League play at Skidmore. Tipoff in Saratoga Springs is at 5:30 p.m.
