Herons down Mustangs 5-3

MORRISVILLE, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team used a three-goal third period to knock off Morrisville 5-3 in a non-conference contest at the Morrisville IcePlex this afternoon. With the win, the Herons improve to 3-0-0 overall on the season while the Mustangs are now 0-2-1.
 
Senior Gina Scibetta (2a) and junior Jules Kennedy (2g) led the way for William Smith with two points each. Seven other skaters had a point for the Herons. Junior Olivia Williams made 29 saves in 60 minutes of action for the Herons.
 
Alexziz Giannamore and Chyne Kennedy each had two assists for Morrisville. Sissy Harman made 10 saves in 60 minutes between the pipes.
 
William Smith started the game strong, scoring on its first two shots. First-year Mia LaPlante opened the scoring 19 seconds into the game. She one-timed a shot from the slot past Harman for her third goal in as many games. Junior Julia Mings was credited with an assist on the goal. LaPlante's tally was the Herons' second fastest goal to start a game. The Herons scored 16 seconds into a 4-2 victory over UMass Boston on Oct. 31, 2015. Just over a minute later, junior Alison Weiss notched her third goal of the season to give William Smith a 2-0 lead. First-year Emily Franciszkowicz was credited with an assist on the goal. Sophomore Taylor Ettore nearly gave the Herons a three goal lead, but her shot from the slot rang off the goal post. Harman smothered first-year Annika Paletzki's rebound attempt.
 
The Mustangs took control of the game in the second period, outshooting William Smith 14-0. Williams stood tall, making 13 saves in the period. Morrisville finally broke through on their 12th shot of the period. Mackenzie Lombardi fired a shot from the point past Williams for her second goal of the season. Giannamore and Chyne Kennedy were credited with assists on the goal.
 
Offense was the story of the third period with the teams combining for five goals in the final 20 minutes, four of which came in the first seven minutes of the period. Junior Emily Martino pocketed her second goal of the season to start the flurry. She weaved through traffic and fired a shot over Harman's blocker. First-year Laura Hill was credited with an assist on the goal. Just over a minute later, Kennedy notched her first goal of the game snapping a shot from the left faceoff circle across the goal line. Scibetta was credited with an assist on the goal. Thirty-one seconds later, Kendra Johnston notched her first goal of the season off a feed from Giannamore. Alana McDonald made it 4-3 with her first goal at the 6:19 mark of the period. Chyne Kennedy and Maddison Devlin were credited with assists on the goal. McDonald wired a shot from the left faceoff circle over Williams' glove and into the upper right corner of the cage. Jules Kennedy iced the game for William Smith at the 15:35 mark of the final period. She poked a loose puck across the goal line for her second goal of the season. Marykate Martino and Scibetta were credited with assists.
 
Morrisville finished the game with a 32-15 edge in shots on goal. The Mustangs were 1-for-4 on the power play while the Herons were 0-for-1. William Smith's lone power play of the game came with the game out of reach and just over a minute left on the clock.
 
The Herons will be back in action this weekend, Nov. 9-10, when it opens up conference play. William Smith will welcome King's to the Cooler on Saturday for a 7 p.m. faceoff. The next day the Herons will take on Wilkes at 4 p.m.
