Herons blank Monarchs in UCHC opener

GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team cruised to an 8-0 victory over King's at The Cooler this evening in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference opener for both teams. The Herons are now 4-0-0 to start the season and 1-0-0 in the UCHC.
 
Junior Emily Martino (1g, 2a) and first-year Laura Hill (1g, 2a) recorded a game-high three points for William Smith. In addition, first-year Alisa Canney notched a pair of goals, senior Kate Klimaszewski had two assists and first-year Mia LaPlante and senior Gina Scibetta had a goal and an assist. Junior Olivia Williams made 17 saves as she earned her first shutout of the season.
 
Canney opened the scoring at the 6:46 mark of the first period. Her first collegiate goal was assisted by Martino and first-year Izzy Friedman. Canney fired a shot from the right faceoff circle over Kiva Sierra Stolz's glove hand and into the upper corner of the cage. Scibetta pocketed her second goal of the season at the 12:23 mark of the first period. She banged home a rebound from directly in front of the cage. Martino and Klimaszewski were credited with assists on the power-play goal.  Four minutes later, junior Alison Weiss extended her point streak to four games. She wristed a shot from the slot past Stoltz's for her fourth goal of the season. Klimaszewski notched her second assist of the game on the goal.
 
LaPlante scored her fourth goal in as many games to extend William Smith's lead to four goals. Hill and fellow first-year Julianna Gong were credited with assists on the goal. Fifty-six seconds later, sophomore Taylor Ettore notched her first collegiate goal. She followed her own rebound and poked the loose puck across the goal line. First-years Emily Franciszkowicz and Emma Brophy were awarded assists on the goal.
 
Hill notched her first collegiate goal 1:28 into the third period. LaPlante won a battle along the boards and fired a cross-ice pass to Hill who one-timed a shot into the back of the net. Just over four minutes later, Canney notched her second goal of the game. She snapped a feed from Scibetta into the upper right corner of the cage. Martino rounded out the scoring with her fourth goal of the season. Hill and first-year Liza Diffley were credited with assists on the goal.
 
William Smith finished the game with a 63-17 edge in shots on goal. The Herons were 1-for-5 on the power play and King's was 0-for-5 with the extra skater.
 
The Herons will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they welcome Wilkes to The Cooler. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
