POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—William Smith College senior
Mia Morrison poured in a career-high 36 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds to lead the Herons to a 70-67 Liberty League win at Vassar College in Division III women's basketball action tonight. The Herons extended their winning streak to six games and clinched the No. 4 seed in the six-team Liberty League Tournament.
Morrison made 14-of-27 shots from the floor with three 3-pointers and sank 5-of-8 at the free throw line. She also recorded three steals and blocked two shots. Sophomore
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou produced 13 points, six rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots. First-year
Olivia Parisi added eight points.
The Herons, who entered the game fourth in the nation in rebounding margin (+14.1), outrebounded the Brewers 48-33. William Smith (16-7, 12-5) also finished the game on the plus side in turnover margin (+3, 15-12).
Vassar (20-4, 14-3) led 18-15 at the end of the first quarter, but the Herons took the lead for good with a 14-2 run to start the second quarter. Morrison accounted for 10 of the 14 points.
Dimitrakopoulou and Morrison made back-to-back buckets to start the second quarter scoring and give William Smith a 1-point lead. Sophie Nick made a jumper about two minutes in to put the Brewers back in front 20-19. Morrison drained back-to-back 3-pointers kicking off 10 straight Heron points. Following a Morrison layup midway through the frame, William Smith led 29-20.
Parisi and Dimitrakopoulou scored the final two baskets of the first half, sending the visitors into halftime with a 38-31 lead. Morrison had game-highs of 20 points and eight boards at the break.
Vassar outscored William Smith 18-16 in the third quarter to narrow the Heron lead to 54-49. Morrison scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to stake William Smith to its largest lead of the game, 59-49.
As the final minute of the contest began, the Herons led 68-62. Ryan DeOrio hit a 3-pointer for the Brewers to make it a 3-point game with 57 seconds to go. The score remained unchanged until Vassar's Isa Peczuh came up with a steal with seven seconds left. She converted a layup on a breakaway to make it a 1-point game. The Brewers fouled
Olivia Hughes who made both free throws with 0.6 seconds left.
After a Vassar timeout that advanced the ball across midcourt, the Brewers were able to inbound the ball, but junior
Emma Gallagher blocked a rushed shot at the buzzer to seal the victory.
Peczuh led Vassar with 23 points. DeOrio had 16 points and Nick posted a double-double on 15 points and 10 rebounds.
William Smith will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 16, visiting Union (15-8, 10-7). Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. The Dutchwomen are locked into the No. 5 seed in the Liberty League Tournament and will travel to William Smith for a first round game on Feb. 19.
Vassar slips back into a tie for first place in the Liberty League standings. The Brewers will host co-leader Ithaca tomorrow at 2 p.m. for the regular season title.
