Seniors lead Herons to victory on Senior Day

GENEVA, N.Y.—Seniors Mia Morrison and Olivia Hughes led the William Smith College basketball team to a 74-38 Liberty League victory over Bard College in their final regular season appearance in Bristol Gymnasium. The Herons dominated the first quarter and never looked back on the way to their fifth straight win.
 
Morrison played just 18 minutes, but produced a team-high 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting with five rebounds and two steals. Hughes added 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, making a pair of threes, with six boards, three steals and two assists. Junior Annaliese Schreder and first-year Olivia Parisi each chipped in nine points. Sophomore Juliana Gamboa handed out a game-high six assists.
 
First-year Christina Kiser was the only Raptor in double figures, ending the game with 30 points, including all 11 Bard points in the fourth quarter.
 
William Smith (15-7, 11-5) opened the game on a 9-2 and raced out to a 28-7 lead after 10 minutes. The Herons continued to add to their lead in the second quarter, outscoring the visitors 25-11 in the second quarter for a 53-18 halftime lead. William Smith had eight players with points at the break, while Kiser had 14 of the Raptor's 18 points.
 
The Herons shot 44 percent from the floor, making 11 3-pointers. They enjoyed a 49-20 rebounding advantage. Bard (5-18, 0-16) shot just 28 percent for the game.
 
William Smith will close out the regular season next weekend on the road, visiting Vassar (20-3, 14-2) on Friday, Feb. 15 and Union (14-7, 9-6) on Saturday, Feb. 16. The Herons currently sit in fourth place in the league standings, a half game behind third place RIT (16-6, 11-4) and a game and a half ahead of the fifth place Dutchwomen.
 
The six-team Liberty League Tournament rewards the top two teams in the regular season standings with a bye to the semifinals. The third and fourth place teams host quarterfinal contests on Feb. 19.
