REDWOOD, Calif. — The Hobart College rowing team raced at the Stanford Invitational this weekend. The No. 22 varsity eight and No. 19 second varsity eight raced for the Statesmen.
On Saturday, "the opening races against California went about as expected," said Head Rowing Coach
Paul Bugenhagen. "The 2V had some miscues and focus points for the afternoon race, and the 1V had a solid opening piece they could build upon."
In the morning, there was a tailwind for racing. The 2V of
Bart Voto,
Cameron Kumagai,
Wyatt Hathaway,
Blake Evans,
Randall Hooper,
Zachary Berzon,
Lukian Maratovic,
David Ranney, and
Michael Canino was paired with third-ranked California for their first race of the day. The Golden Bears finished 26.9 seconds before the Statesmen. Hobart clocked in with a time of 6:10.5.
The varsity eight of
Greg Narzikul,
Patrick Overton,
Carter Weitekamp,
Moritz Marchart,
Alberto Wray,
Martin Roeck,
Henry Vachon,
Andrew Krimmel, and
Jackson Baney raced the fourth-ranked Golden Bears. California finished 15.2 seconds before Hobart. The Statesmen crossed the line with a time of 5:48.2.
"The afternoon was very strong for the Statesmen," said Bugenhagen. "The 2V addressed all of their flaws from the morning and had a fantastic win over Stanford. The 1V executed their best race of the year and illustrated the quality they possess in a close loss to Stanford."
In the afternoon there was a crosswind for racing. The 2V was paired with No. 21 Stanford. The Statesmen notched a 3.4 second victory over the Cardinals. Hobart posted a time of 5:57.5.
Hobart's varsity eight raced against No. 13 Stanford. The Cardinals finished 3.1 seconds before the Statesmen. Hobart clocked in with a time of 5:51.2
On Sunday, "the 2V raced a fine crew from Oregon State," said Bugenhagen. "They had a solid race against a faster crew. They will leave California with vital experience and focus on their next steps."
The 2V was matched up with No. 17 Oregon State. The Beavers reached the finish 6.5 seconds before the Statesmen. Hobart crossed the line with a time of 6:31.2
"The 1V misfired in their opening sequence against Oregon State," said Bugenhagen. "The crews ran the final 1500 meters holding each other's speed all the way down the track."
Hobart's varsity eight was paired with the Beavers, 18th-ranked varsity eight. Oregon had a 3.3 second victory over the Statesmen. Hobart finished with a time of 6:08.6.
Hobart will be back on the water Saturday, April 27, when it travels to Syracuse, N.Y., for a race vs. Marist College.
