William Smith defeats Union 7-2

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — The William Smith College tennis team defeated Union 7-2 this afternoon. The Herons are now 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the Liberty League.
 
William Smith had a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of double play. First-year Maggie Bonomo and sophomore Dina Rigas fell 8-6 to Tal Pezzuco and Paige Webster in the No. 1 spot. Juniors Kate Foley and Allie Perron bested Megan Brown and Cathy Xing 8-4 at No. 2. Sophomores Charlotte Engebrecht and Katelyn Nguyen notched a win at No. 1 over Sydney Robison and Samantha Siegel 8-1.
 
The Herons clinched the match in singles play. Perron notched a point at No. 1 after a battle in the third set. She bested Pezzuco 6-1, 4-6, 14-12. Bonomo defeated Brown 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2. Foley topped Webster 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 3 spot. Rigas bested Siegel 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4. Junior Leland Barclay notched a point at No. 5 over Xing. Senior Alex Greenberg fell 6-2, 4-6, 5-10 to Union's Alex Greenberg at No. 6.
 
William Smith will be back in action on Thursday, April 11, when they host Nazareth at the HWS Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
