Maialen Martinez scored the game-winning goal 1:47 into the second overtime as the fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team defeated 10th-ranked Hardin-Simmons 1-0 at the HSU Soccer Complex this evening.

After the Herons and the host Cowgirls held each other scoreless for 101 minutes, Martinez broke the deadlock with her first career game-winning goal. She redirected a crossing pass from senior
Emilie Sauvayre into the back of the net.

The teams were evenly matched through the first 90 minutes of the game with Hardin-Simmons holding a 5-3 edge in shots. William Smith took control of the game in the first overtime, outshooting the Cowgirls 5-0. Junior
Merilyn Hinrichs nearly won the game in the 100th minute. She fired a shot from the top of the penalty area off the crossbar.

Sophomore
Amanda Kesler started in goal for William Smith and made one save as she earned the shutout. Haley Foley made three saves in goal for Hardin-Simmons.

The Herons will be back in action tomorrow evening when they take on Mary Hardin-Baylor. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. ET (5 p.m. CT) at the HSU Soccer Complex.
