Game Recap: Hobart Soccer | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

Statesmen tame #10 Red Dragons 1-0

GENEVA, N.Y.-Senior goalie Brian Salazar made a career-high eight saves, leading the Hobart College soccer team to a 1-0 victory over 10th-ranked Cortland on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Statesmen, who were receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll released this afternoon, are now 6-1-0 to start the season.

Junior Liam Born's third goal of the season in the 65th minute was all Hobart needed to post its second victory over a top 10 team this season. Born collected the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, faked left, turned his defender and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the cage.

The teams traded opportunities throughout the first half. Cortland (4-2-0) emerged from the opening 45 minutes with an 8-7 edge in shots. Hobart had the first scoring opportunity of the game in the second minute, but the play was blown dead because a Hobart player was offside on the play. The Red Dragons had the better of the scoring chances in the opening stanza but could not solve Salazar. In the 38th minute, Sam Fuller beat the Statesmen defense and fired a shot on cage, but it was turned aside by Salazar at the last second.

The Statesmen nearly opened the scoring in the 51st minute off a corner kick, but Pete Critchlow and Kyle Walsh's headers were swiped off the line by Cortland defenders. Cortland had perhaps its best scoring opportunity of the game in the 88th minute, but Anthony Ruggiero's shot from inside the 18-yard box just missed the left post. Ruggiero would have one more chance in the final seven seconds of the game off a set piece but his shot was smothered by Salazar.

Cortland finished the game with an 18-14 edge in shots and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Salazar played all 90 minutes as he earned his third shutout of the season. Sean Kelly played all 90 minutes in goal for the Red Dragons and made three saves.

Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 21, when it welcomes Rochester to Cozzens Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
