GENEVA, N.Y. — The William Smith College field hockey team defeated Cortland 2-0 this afternoon on McCooey Field. First-year
Molly Dutton scored her first collegiate goal, and first-year
Mackenzie Wodka tallied an assist on both goals.
The Herons dominated the game, taking 26 shots and holding the Red Dragons to seven. William Smith also had a 10-4 advantage on penalty corners.
22 minutes into the first half, Wodka took the ball up the right side of the field and found Dutton in front of the goal. Dutton rattled a shot off to give the Herons a 1-0 lead. William Smith ended the half with 15 shots, holding Cortland to two.
Eight minutes into the second half, Wodka took the ball up the sideline and found junior
Sophie Craig in front of the cage. Craig blasted a shot past Marisa D'Amico, recording the twelfth goal of her career.
Cortland rallied in the fourth quarter, firing off five shots, but they were unable to get the ball past sophomore
Stephanie Stone. Molly Quinlan had a team high of two shots for the Red Dragons. Sophomore
Emma Schafer tallied a team high eleven shots, putting eight on goal for the Herons.
D'Amico stopped 16 shots, and Stone saved four for the win.
The Herons will be back in action Wednesday, September 25, when they host Hamilton on McCooey Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
