‘Jackets rally past Herons in league opener

GENEVA, N.Y. —The William Smith College field hockey team fell to the University of Rochester 3-1 this afternoon on McCooey Field. The Yellowjackets scored three straight goals in the third period to rally past the Herons in their first Liberty League match of the season.

The Herons (2-6, 0-1) scored first, and capitalized on their only penalty corner of the game. Sophomore Elizabeth Jacobia took the penalty corner for the Herons. Jacobia found junior Sophie Craig at the top of the arc, who then passed it to first-year Kate Barilla. Barilla rattled off a shot, and first-year Lauren Jackson flicked the ball into the net to put William Smith ahead 1-0.

A minute into the second half, Rochester (5-4, 1-0) tied the game. Colleen Maillie found Maya Haigis at the top of the arc, and fired a shot off. A minute later, Juney Lee took a penalty corner for the Yellowjackets. Juney connected with Haigias to put Rochester up 2-1. Rochester finished the three goal rally when Maillie fed Catherine Hauser.

The Yellowjackets took 18 shots, and limited William Smith to six. Rochester also had an 11-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Junior Alexandra DeVito made four saves for the Herons, and sophomore Stephanie Stone recorded one.

The Herons will be back in action Wednesday, Oct. 2, when they host Nazareth. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on McCooey Field. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to support local breast cancer charity Embrace Your Sisters.
