Pioneers slip past Hobart in OT

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.-The Hobart College soccer team was edged by William Paterson 2-1 in overtime in the championship game of the 2019 Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic this afternoon. With the loss, the Statesmen are now 3-1-0 on the season.

The Pioneers (2-2-1) needed just 52 seconds in overtime to score the game-winning goal. Dromo Quaye converted on a long range strike for his second goal of the season. The goal was unassisted. Quaye's tally came 22 seconds after Hobart senior Nate Cary nearly won the game. His shot was stopped by Thomas Hatch.

The Statesmen opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Junior Pete Critchlow beat Hatch with a low shot that he tucked inside the goal post. His unassisted goal came on Hobart's first shot of the game. William Paterson answered just over three minutes later when Johnny Gadaleta pocketed his first goal of the season. He collected a pass from Kyle Adams and slid it past Brian Salazar.

Neither team found the back of the net in the second half. Salazar made back-to-back key saves in the 77th minute to keep the game deadlocked. He stopped point blank shots from Martin Menendez and Yachine Wahon in quick succession.

William Paterson finished the game with a 15-6 edge in shots on goal and a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Salazar played every minute in goal for Hobart, making six saves. Hatch started in goal for the Pioneers and finished the game with two saves.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 11, when they travel to Potsdam for a non-conference contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
