Game Recap: Hobart Ice Hockey | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

Statesmen, Beavers skate to 0-0 tie

GENEVA, N.Y.- The sixth-ranked Hobart College hockey team and Babson skated to a 0-0 tie in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this evening. With the tie, Statesmen are now 9-3-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the NEHC while the Beavers are 9-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play.

Joe Halstrom started in goal for Hobart and made 30 saves as he earned his second shutout of the season. The Statesmen blocked an additional eight shots in the game.

At the opposite end of the rink, Brad Arvanitis made a career-high 47 saves as he earned his third shutout of the season. The Beavers blocked an additional 22 shots.

Hobart controlled the pace of play in the first period, outshooting Babson 18-7. After the Beavers recorded the first shot of the game, the Statesmen rattled off the next seven. Junior Mike Faulkner had the best chance in the opening flurry, but Arvanitis made a glove save on the shot from the point. Just past the midway point of the period, senior Lawson MacDougall deked around a defender and fired a shot on cage that was turned aside by Arvanitis. Ryan Black had Babson's best chance of the first period with just under seven minutes remaining. He snapped a shot on goal from the right faceoff circle that was turned aside by Halstrom at the last second.

The teams exchanged chances in the second period, but the goalies were up to the task. Thirty seconds into the period, Nick Rosa forced a turnover at the blue line, deked a defender and wristed a shot on goal, but Halstrom was there to make the save. Junior Ryan Lynch had Hobart's best chance of the period, but he was unable to poke the loose puck across the goal line.

Sophomore Aaron Maguyon had the game's best scoring opportunity in the closing minutes of regulation. Fellow sophomore Zach Tyson forced a turnover in the neutral zone. He and Maguyon broke into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1 rush. Tyson drew the defender and slid a pass to Maguyon, who one-timed the shot on cage. The puck trickled through Arvanitis' legs, but the goalie squeezed his pads together to keep the puck out of the net.

Both teams had two shots on goal in the overtime session.

Hobart finished the game with a 47-30 edge in shots on goal. The Statesmen were 0-for-5 on the power play. The Beavers, who entered the game with the nation's top power play unit, were 0-for-3 with the extra skater.

Hobart will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when it welcomes UMass Boston to the Cooler. Babson will travel to take on Skidmore. Faceoff for both games is scheduled for 4 p.m.
