GENEVA, N.Y.- The sixth ranked Hobart College hockey team scored two goals in each period as it defeated UMass Boston 6-2 in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this evening. With the win, the Statesmen extend their unbeaten streak to five games.
Â
Six different players scored a goal for Hobart (10-3-2, 4-3-1). Juniors
Travis Schneider (1g, 1a) and
Alec Robitaille (1g, 1a), and sophomore
Blake Coffey (2a) each had two points in the victory. Sophomore
Liam Lascelle made 27 saves as he earned the victory in his first start of the season.
Â
Jeffrey Skinner and Joe Petruzzella scored for the Beacons (8-6-1, 4-3-1). Petruzzella added an assist to finish with a team-high two points. Bailey MacBurnie started in goal for UMass Boston and made 13 saves before leaving the game with an injury. Sam Best came on in relief and stopped 16 shots.
Â
Senior
Will Harrison opened the scoring at the 3:21 mark of the first period. Crashing the net, he banged home a rebound from directly in front of the cage for his third goal of the season. Sophomore
Dan Sliney and junior
Andrew Longo were credited with assists on the goal. Sliney had the initial shot, a wraparound attempt, stuffed by MacBurnie.
Â
UMass Boston tied the game at the 10:27 mark of the third period. Petruzzella fired a shot through traffic past Lascelle for his first collegiate goal. Ryan Rowland and Derek Caruso were credited with assists on the power-play goal.
Â
Junior
Ryan Lynch gave Hobart a 2-1 lead with his fourth tally of the season. He took advantage of a juicy rebound and flipped the shot into the back of the net. Coffey and Robitaille were credited with assists on the goal.
Â
The Statesmen took control of the game in the second period, outshooting the Beacons 15-8. Senior
Julien Denicourt scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal just over two minutes into the period. He snapped a shot from the point through a screen inside the left goal post. His second goal of the season was set up by Coffey and Schneider. Five minutes later, Schneider added a goal of his own off a feed from sophomore
Aaron Maguyon. Maguyon emerged from a scrum along the boards with the puck. He poked it ahead to Schneider, who avoided a diving Best, and wristed the shot into the vacated cage.
Â
At the 11:58 mark of the second period, the Beacons cut into Hobart's lead with another power-play goal. Jeffrey Skinner beat Lascelle with a wrist shot from the low slot for his sixth goal of the season. Nick Albano and Petruzzella were credited with assists on the goal.
Â
The Beacons nearly made it a one goal game with six minutes remaining in the game, but Lascelle made a glove save on a Daniel Nachbaur shot from the left faceoff circle.
Â
Hobart iced the game with a pair of empty-net goals late in the third period off the sticks of junior
TJ Schultz and Robitaille. It was Schultz's first goal of the season and Robitaille's team leading seventh goal.
Â
The Statesmen finished the game with a 35-29 advantage in shots on goal. UMass Boston was 2-for-3 on the power play and Hobart was 0-for-3 with the extra attacker.
Â
The Statesmen will begin a four-game road trip next Friday, Jan. 17, when they travel to take on Suffolk. Faceoff in Boston is scheduled for 7 p.m.
