GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team scored four goals in the second period and held on to defeat Chatham 5-2 in an United Collegiate Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this evening. With their fourth straight win, the Herons are now 11-7-0 overall and 7-2-0 in UCHC play.

Jules Kennedy finished with a game-high three points on a goal and two assists. For the second straight game, first-year
Julianna Gong notched a pair of goals. Senior
Gina Scibetta (1g, 1a) and junior
Emily Martino (2a) also had multi-point games. Sophomore
Amanda Aalto started in goal and made 24 saves.

Brooke Almond (1g, 1a) had a team-high two points for the Cougars (5-11-1, 1-7-1). Katy Reed started in goal for Chatham and made 33 saves.

Neither team found the back of the net in the first period. William Smith finished the opening period with a 17-5 edge in shots on goal. Just over six minutes into the period, first-year
Mia LaPlante fired a shot off the crossbar from the right faceoff circle. LaPlante collected the rebound and snapped a shot on goal, but Reed made a glove save.

The Herons opened the scoring at the 4:20 mark of the second period. Junior
Alison Weiss carried the puck around the back of the net and a dropped a pass to first-year
Alisa Canney. Canney wristed a shot from a tight angle past Reed for her fifth goal of the season. Two minutes later, William Smith doubled its lead. Gong one-timed a shot from the left faceoff circle past Reed for her sixth goal of the season. The power-play goal was set up by a tape-to-tape pass from Kennedy in the opposite faceoff circle. Martino was also credited with an assist on the goal. Kennedy scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal at the 11:16 mark of the second period. She forced a turnover at her own blue line, skated the length of the rink and slid a backhand shot past Reed. Her fifth goal of the season was unassisted. Scibetta added a power play goal with 37 seconds remaining in the period. She collected a tape-to-tape pass from Kennedy and blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the cage. Martino also notched an assist on Scibetta's eighth goal of the season.

The Cougars came out of the second intermission and took control of the momentum of the game, outshooting William Smith 14-8 in the frame. Chatham broke up the shutout bid at the 9:11 mark of the third period. Holly Ackerman wristed a shot from the slot past Aalto for her seventh goal of the season. Brooke Almond was credited with an assist on the goal. Four minutes later, Almond made it 4-2 with her second goal of the season. She cut to the net from the left faceoff circle and tucked a shot inside the right goal post. Fiona Danahy and Grace Johnson were credited with assists on the goal.

Gong iced the game with an empty-net goal at the 18:11 mark of the third period. She flipped a shot from center ice into the back of the net. Her seventh goal of the season was assisted by Scibetta and senior
Kate Klimaszewski.

William Smith finished the game with a 38-26 edge in shots on goal. The Herons were 2-for-7 on the power play and the Cougars were 1-for-8 with the extra skater.

William Smith will be back in action next Friday, Jan. 31, when it heads to Neumann to begin a four-game road trip. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
