Amherst skates past William Smith 6-1

GENEVA, N.Y.-The Amherst College hockey team scored three goals in the second and third periods as it skated to a 6-1 victory over William Smith at the Cooler this afternoon. The Herons are now 7-6-0 on the season while the Mammoths improve to 5-3-2 overall.

Senior Gina Scibetta scored for William Smith. Junior Olivia Williams stopped 39 shots in 60 minutes of action in goal for the Herons.

Emma Flynn had a game-high four points on four assists and Kaitlin Hoang added three helpers to lead the way for Amherst. Their linemate Angelina Wiater finished the game with a pair goals. Anna Kruesel made 18 saves as she earned her first victory of the season.

William Smith opened the scoring just over a minute into the game. First-year Mia LaPlante forced a turnover at the blue line, deked her defender and fired a shot on goal. Kruesel made the initial save, but Scibetta banged home the rebound for her fourth goal of the season. The goal was the 40th of Scibetta's career, matching William Smith's record set by Krista Federow '18. The Herons continued to apply the pressure in the first period, but Kruesel stood tall, stopping the next nine shots she faced. First-years Julianna Gong and Alisa Canney had William Smith's best chances but could not find the back of the net.

Rose Mroczka had Amherst's best scoring opportunity of the first period but her shot from the point was stopped by Williams. Mroczka pounced on the rebound and fired a shot off the goal post.

Amherst took control of the game in the second period, outshooting the Herons 23-5. Wiater tied the game with her third goal of the season at the 7:55 mark of the period. She fired a shot through traffic into the upper right corner of the cage. Flynn and Hoang recorded assists on the goal. Two minutes later, Wiater scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal, collecting a rebound in the slot and flipped it past Williams. Stephanie Nomicos and Flynn were credited with assists on the power-play goal. Ninety seconds later, Anne Malloy gave the Mammoths a two goal lead. She wristed a shot past Williams for her fourth goal of the season. Hoang and Flynn notched assists on the goal.

Amherst carried the momentum into the third period and extended the lead to three goals 83 seconds into the frame. Katie Phol blasted a shot through traffic for her fourth goal of the season. Nomicos and Kenzie MacDonald were awarded assists on the power-play goal.  Mia DelRosso and Carley Daly rounded out the scoring for the Mammoths.
