Knox breaks program, NEC scoring marks in win over Siena

GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore attackman Jason Knox scored a record-breaking 10 goals as Hobart College defeated Siena College 26-9 in the Thomas B. Poole '61 and Family Sports Dome this afternoon. Knox, who broke the program's Division I goals in a game record with nine last season at Siena, eclipsed his own mark as well as the Northeast Conference record for goals in a game.

Knox scored at least once in each quarter, including a five-goal outburst in the second quarter. It's the most goals in a game by a Statesman since John Topichak '71 scored the program's overall record, 14, in a win at Brockport on May 21, 1969. Knox also added an assist to finish the day with 11 points, the most by a Statesman since Chris Aslanian '19 had 13 points (6g 7a) against Wagner in 2017.

Hobart's potent offense saw nine different players score goals and 15 players produce points. The Statesmen posted 41 points as a team, the most since logging 47 (30g 17a) against Arizona in 1990. Senior Eric Holden contributed four goals and a team-high three assists. Junior Tommy Mott also scored four goals and logged an assist. Junior Ryan Archer and first-year John Herlihy each posted three-point games.

The Statesmen won 23-of-38 faceoffs highlighted by the performance of first-year Adam Shea. He won 20-of-29 and grabbed a game-high 12 ground balls.

Hobart (2-0) was credited with 11 caused turnovers in the game, including a team-high two by Knox.

Senior goalie Sam Lucchesi made 10 saves in 52 minutes of work to earn the win.

Senior Dylan Pantalone and junior Nick Casner led Siena (1-1) with four points apiece. Both players had a goal and three assists. First-year Colin Gleason, sophomore Luke Julien and sophomore Christian Watts each scored twice. Junior Jason Zou was 12-of-30 on faceoffs and had a team-high four ground balls. Junior Anthony Tebbano got the start in goal, making 10 saves in the first half.

The first quarter gave little hint at the offensive explosion that was to come from Hobart. The Saints scored three times in a span of less than two minutes to take a 3-0 lead midway through the opening frame. Holden got the Statesmen on the board with just under seven minutes left in the first. Junior long-stick midfielder Dan Ryan followed with another Hobart goal 14 seconds later. Off a Shea faceoff win, Ryan raced in on goal and fired a shot on Tebbano. He made the initial save, but the rebound came right back to Ryan, who dunked it home for his first collegiate goal.

Siena made it 4-2 before Knox joined the scoring parade, diving from below the goal line to cut Siena's lead to 4-3 after one quarter.

The second quarter was all Statesmen. Less than a minute in, Herlihy scored off an Archer assist to tie the game and two minutes later, Knox buried a feed from sophomore Casey Hochheimer. Holden scored Hobart's third goal in as many minutes to make it 6-4. Julien stopped the home team's four-goal run to briefly make it a one-goal game, but the Statesmen rattled off nine straight goals to go into halftime with a 15-5 lead.

The only drama of the second half was how many goals Hobart and Knox would score. The Statesmen finished two goals shy of the program's Division I era game record (a 28-8 win at Canisius on April 8, 1998). Knox got his record breaker with a man-up goal that was set up by a cross crease pass from first-year Jack Grooms at the seven-minute mark of the fourth quarter.

Hobart was 3-of-4 with the extra man while limiting Siena to just 1-of-6.

The Statesmen will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 22, when they host Colgate (0-2). The opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
