Game Recap: Hobart Ice Hockey | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

4-goal 2nd period sends Statesmen past Huskies

GENEVA, N.Y.-The fifth-ranked Hobart College hockey team scored four goals in the second period as it rallied past the University of Southern Maine 5-3 in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this evening. With the win, the Statesmen are 15-4-3 overall and 9-4-2 in conference play. The Huskies fall to 7-13-3 overall and 6-8-2 in the NEHC.
 
Junior Mike Faulkner recorded a game-high three points on three assists. Sophomore Aaron Maguyon (1g, 1a) also had a multi-point game for the Statesmen. Sophomore Joe Halstrom started in goal and made 24 saves in the victory.
 
Six different players recorded a point for the Huskies. Derek Tillotson, Ethan Bassile and Maverick Lynes scored for Southern Maine. Paul Leger started in goal and made 41 saves.
 
The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead, scoring on their first shot of the game at the 1:35 mark of the first period. Tillotson collected a loose puck in the slot and wristed a shot past Halstrom for his fifth goal of the season. Johnny Kyte and Adam Withers were credited with assists on the goal.
 
Just past the midway point of the period, junior Travis Schneider tied the game with his eighth goal of the season. He one-timed a shot from the right faceoff circle past Leger. Faulkner and Maguyon were credited with assists on the goal.
 
The Huskies took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission on Bassile's fifth goal of the season. Following a scramble in front of the goal, Bassile poked a loose puck across the goal line.
 
Hobart took control of the game in the second period, outshooting Southern Maine 18-9. The Statesmen drew level on senior Zach Sternbach's 10th goal of the season. He fired a shot from the left faceoff circle into the back of the net. Senior Lawson MacDougall was credited with an assist on the power-play goal. Two minutes later, sophomore Zach Tyson notched a short-handed goal to give Hobart a 3-2 lead. Faulkner was awarded an assist on the goal. Maguyon scored what would prove to be the game winning goal at the 7:10 mark of the middle period. He wired a shot from the slot past Leger for his seventh goal of the season. Faulkner and junior TJ Schultz were credited with assists on the power-play goal. Senior Will Harrison gave Hobart a three-goal lead with his sixth tally of the season. Harrison forced a turnover in the slot and blasted a shot into the upper right corner of the cage. It was the ninth time this season that the Statesmen scored four goals in a period.
 
Lynes scored the lone goal in the third period. He one-timed a shot from the point past Halstrom for his eighth goal of the season. Michael Green was credited with an assist on the goal.
 
Hobart finished the game with a 46-27 edge in shots on goal. The Statesmen were 2-for-8 on the power play and the Huskies were 0-for-6 with the extra attacker.
 
Hobart will be back in action tomorrow, Feb. 8, when it welcomes New England College to the Cooler. Southern Maine will take on Skidmore in Saratoga Springs. Faceoff for both games is scheduled for 4 p.m.
