NCAA basketball, hockey tournaments canceled

Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships.

As a result, Hobart will not play Christopher Newport University tomorrow in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Sectional Round in Newport News, Va. Nor will the Statesmen make the trip to Adrian, Mich., for Saturday's NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship first round.

The NCAA's statement to its member schools read in part:

"The decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to the spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities."

Hobart basketball finishes the year with a 23-5 record, the program's modern record for winning percentage (.821) and tied the mark for most wins in a season.

Hobart hockey finishes the season with a 20-5-3 record. It is the program's fifth 20-win season in the past six years. The Statesmen were set to make their sixth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance.

The Hobart and William Smith Administration will review this national decision to determine the course of action for Statesmen and Heron spring sports.
