SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team jumped out to a 3-0 first-half lead and held on for a 4-3 victory over Union in a Liberty League contest at College Park Field this afternoon. With the victory, the Statesmen are now 6-5-1 this season with a 3-2-1 mark in conference play.
Landon DeCesare-Fousek and
Matias Valenzuela Matic led the way for Hobart. They each had a goal and an assist in the win.
Christian Burkhart played all 90 minutes in goal, recording two saves.
Evan Farr had a pair of goals for Union (4-6-1, 0-5-0). Kenyon Pelletier started and made three saves in 68 minutes in goal for the Dutchmen. Sean Speck came on and did not face a shot in the final 22 minutes of action.
The Statesmen dominated the first half, compiling a 7-0 edge in shots.
Amad Miller opened the scoring in the seventh minute. His shot from the left side of the 18-yard box curled inside the right post. His fourth goal of the season was assisted by
Frederick Madsen. In the 32nd minute, DeCesare-Fousek connected on his first goal of the season. He slipped a shot past Pelletier into the lower right corner of the cage. Valenzuela Matic was credited with an assist on the goal. Five minutes later,
Liam Dillon notched his first collegiate goal. He redirected a pass from DeCesare-Fousek across the goal line.
Union broke up the shutout bid eight minutes into the second half. Farr notched his first goal of the game in the 54th minute. Off of a corner kick, he chipped a shot past Burkhart. Craig Miller and Sebastian Santelices were credited with assists on the goal.
Valenzuela Matic scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 65th minute. He fired a shot from near the penalty spot into the upper right corner of the cage.
Nick Kriak recorded an assist on the goal.
Matthew Dough cut into Hobart's lead with his 82nd-minute goal. His third tally of the season was assisted by Connor Dolin. Farr wrapped up the scoring with a penalty kick goal with 42 seconds remaining in regulation.
Hobart finished the game with a 12-9 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Hobart will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 16, when it travels to Troy, N.Y., to take on Rensselaer. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
