GENEVA, N.Y.—The sixth-ranked William Smith College soccer team rolled to an 8-0 Liberty League victory over Union on Cozzens Field this afternoon. Seven of the eight Heron goals were scored by seniors. With its 10th straight victory, William Smith is now 11-1-1 on the season and 6-0-0 in Liberty League play.
The Herons' eight goals in today's game are the most scored by William Smith against the Dutchwomen in a series that dates back to 1995. The previous high was five in 2016 and 1995. Both of those games were also in Geneva.
Julia Keogh led the charge for the Herons, scoring a pair of goals.
Amanda Adams,
Ava Ruppersberger and
Merilyn Hinrichs had a goal and an assist each.
Amanda Kesler started and played the opening 59 minutes in goal for William Smith, making one save.
Kirsten Nelson came on for the final 31 minutes and did not face a shot. It was William Smith's ninth consecutive shutout.

After a 35-minute lightning delay, William Smith wasted little time jumping on the attack. Twenty-six seconds into the game, Hinrichs fired a shot from long range just over the crossbar.
Amanda Adams opened the scoring in the fifth minute, curling a shot around the Dutchwomen keeper for her fifth goal of the season. Ruppersberger was credited with an assist on the tally. Two minutes later, Hinrichs ripped a shot from 20-yards that just beat Mitty's outstretched hands. Adams was credited with an assist on the strike.
Sheila McQuillen added to the lead with a goal in the ninth minute. She collected a rebound and fired a shot off the crossbar that bounced directly down and trickled across the goal line. Her seventh goal of the season was assisted by Hinrichs.
William Smith continued to apply pressure in the offensive end of the field, racking up a 15-2 edge in shots.
Keogh's first goal of the game came in the 51st minute. She redirected a
Katrine Berg corner kick past Mitty. It was her 11th goal of the season. Four minutes later Ruppersberger pocketed her second goal of the season. Her unassisted shot from the top of the 18-yard box curled into the upper right corner of the goal. Keogh extended William Smith's lead to six goals with her second tally of the game. She picked up her own rebound and slipped a left-footed shot past Mitty. It was Keogh's team-leading 12th goal of the season.
Sofie Varner and
Sarah Gray rounded out the scoring with goals in the 70th and 86th minute, respectively. Varner stole the ball off of a Union defender and chipped a shot past Mitty for her second goal of the season. Gray's third goal of the season came off a brilliant crossing pass from
Janne Knieke.
William Smith finished the game with a 33-2 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 16, when it welcomes Rensselaer to Cozzens Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
