Statesmen edge Bard 1-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team defeated Bard 1-0 in a Liberty League contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With the win, the Statesmen are now 5-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 conference play.

Mick van Timmeren's goal in the eighth minute held up as Guillermo Castaneda Chang collected his third shutout of the season.

Van Timmeren's goal came on Hobart's first shot of the game. Off of a corner kick, he drilled a right-footed volley into the lower right-hand corner of the net. Landon DeCesare-Fousek was credited with an assist on van Timmeren's first collegiate goal. DeCesare-Fousek nearly scored a goal of his own in the 21st minute, but his curling shot from the top of the 18-yard box hit the right goal post. The Statesmen continued to pile up the chances in the first half but were unable to sneak a second shot past Gavin Hersey. Hobart finished the opening 45 minutes with a 7-2 edge in shots.

Matias Valenzuela Matic had a great chance three minutes into the second half, but his curling shot from 20-yards out just missed the upper right corner of the cage. Sam Lescher had an opportunity in the 75th minute, but his attempt was blocked by a Bard defender.

Castaneda Chang made three saves as he earned the shutout victory. Gavin Hersey played all 90 minutes in goal for Bard (4-5-0. 0-3-0) and made four saves.

The Statesmen ended the game with a 16-6 edge in shots and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Hobart will be back in action next Saturday, Oct. 9, when it heads out on the road to start a three-game road trip. The Statesmen will travel to Potsdam to take on Clarkson at 2 p.m.
