Hobart storms past Utica 5-2

GENEVA, N.Y.—On a wet and rainy night, the Hobart College soccer team scored four first-half goals as it cruised to a 5-2 victory over Utica in a non-conference contest on Boswell Field at Urick Stadium this afternoon. With the victory, the Statesmen are now 8-6-2 this season and have completed the non-conference portion of its schedule.

The five goals were the most scored in a game by Hobart since scoring five against the Pioneers on Sept. 20, 2016.

The Statesmen's offensive outburst was led by Frederick Madsen's first career two-goal game. August Martini registered a goal and an assist and Robbie Caron had two helpers off the bench in the victory. Christian Burkhart started and played the opening 45 minutes in goal, making one save. Guillermo Castaneda Chang came on to start the second half and did not make a save in just over 34 minutes of action. Victor Roccki played the final 11 minutes.

Byamungu Mugushu and Kamer Lenio scored for Utica (8-6-1). Eduardo Paez played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.

Martini opened the scoring in the sixth minute off of an indirect free kick inside the 18-yard box. Paez mistakenly picked up a pass from his defender, causing the indirect kick. Martini bent a shot around the Pioneers' wall for his first goal of the season. Matias Valenzuela Matic was credited with an assist on the strike.

Utica drew level in the 22nd minute. Mugushu picked up a bouncing ball inside the 18-yard box and slipped a left-footed shot past Burkhart. Michael Bernardo was credited with an assist on the goal. Seventy-two seconds later Lenio pocketed his first goal of the season chipping home a shot from close range.

Hobart drew level a minute later on Madsen's first goal of the game. His third goal of the season was set up by a brilliant leading pass from Caron. Caron's feed led Madsen past his defender. Madsen then dribbled into the box and fired a shot past Paez. Eight minutes later, Madsen converted again. He one-timed a centering pass from Amad Miller into the back of the net. Caron also notched an assist on the goal. It was Madsen's fourth goal of the year. Connor Koschineg added a goal in the 40th minute. He redirected home Martini's corner kick.

Landon DeCesare-Fousek added an insurance goal in the 55th minute. He fired a shot from 10-yards out off of the crossbar, collected the rebound and headed a shot past Paez. It was DeCesare-Fousek's third goal of the year.

Hobart finished the game with a 19-5 edge in shots, including an 11-0 advantage in the second half. Hobart earned two corner kicks in the game while Utica had one.

The Statesmen conclude their regular season on Saturday, Oct. 30, when they welcome St. Lawrence to Cozzens Field. The finale will have an impact on the final Liberty League regular season standings as the Saints and Statesmen currently sit fifth and sixth, respectively, in the league standings and spots 3-6 are separated by just three points.
