William Smith blanks Potsdam 6-0, hands Cunnigham first career win

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College ice hockey team cruised to a 6-0 win over Potsdam at The Cooler this evening. The victory gave Head Coach Matt Cunningham a win in his head coaching debut.
 
Six different players scored a goal and 14 different players recorded a point for the Herons. Amanda Aalto started in goal and made 24 saves as she earned her fourth career shutout.
 
Hannah Barrett played all 60 minutes in goals for the Bears (0-1-0) and made 36 saves.
 
Just under five minutes into the first period, Annabel Ziskin opened the scoring. She deked around a defender and wristed a shot from the slot past Barrett. Her first career goal would prove to be the game-winning tally. Mia LaPlante was credited with an assist following a clearing pass from the defensive zone. William Smith broke the game open with a pair of goals 17 seconds apart in the middle of the first period. Taylor Ettore chipped a loose puck bast Barrett at the 13:11 mark of the period. Kayla Ketchabaw was credited with an assist on the extra-attacker goal. The Herons had pulled their goalie during the sequence as a delayed penalty had been called. On the ensuing power-play, Emily Martino fired home a shot from the left faceoff circle. Aalto was credited with an assist on the goal.  

Just over eight minutes into the second period Alex George gave William Smith a 4-0 lead with her first collegiate goal. She wristed a shot from the right faceoff circle into the upper right corner of the cage. Mackenzie O'Neil and Anna Krajewski were credited with assists on the goal.
 
Tiffany Foster and Ava Cornforth added insurance goals in the third period. Foster's first collegiate goal came on a four-on-four opportunity. Alisa Canney won the neutral zone faceoff back to Foster. Foster broke into the offensive zone and blasted a shot past Barrett. Cornforth's first collegiate goal rounded out the scoring with 48 seconds remaining in regulation. Izzy Friedman and Emma Duffey were credited with assists on the goal.
 
The Herons finished the game with a 42-24 edge in shots on goal.
 
William Smith and Potsdam will conclude the weekend series Saturday, Oct. 30. Faceoff in Potsdam, New York is scheduled for 3 p.m.
