GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College hockey team erupted for eight goals in the second period as it rolled to a 9-2 victory over Manhattanville at The Cooler this afternoon. With the victory, the Statesmen are 2-0-0 to start the season.
Hobart was led by
Wil Crane, who recorded a hat trick, and
Luke Aquaro, who scored a pair of goals. Crane's three goals in today's game match a Hobart single-game record.
Ethan Mulhearn had three helpers while
Zach Tyson,
Aaron Maguyon and
Jackson Alexeev each had a goal and an assist. Three players had two assists in the win for the Statesmen.
Joe Halstrom started in goal and played the first 40 minutes, making six saves.
Adam Dmyterko played the final 20 minutes and made four saves.
Jarod Lavallee and Niko Happo scored for Manhattanville (0-1-0). Alexei Masanko made 30 saves in just over 36 minutes of work. Reid Roberson made 21 saves in the final 24 minutes of work.
The Valiants opened the scoring 6:57 into the first period. Lavelle crashed the net and flipped home a rebound for his first goal of the season. The short-handed goal was assisted by Mason Emoff.
Following the goal, Hobart pressed for the equalizer, but Masanko was up to the task making 17 saves in the first period.
Just under three minutes into the second period, the Statesmen swung momentum in their favor. Alexeev picked up a loose puck in the slot and fired a shot past Masanko. His first collegiate goal was assisted by Mulhearn and
Austin Mourar. Less than 90 seconds later,
Matthew Iasenza pocketed his first collegiate goal. He broke into the offensive end and slipped a back-handed shot across the goal line.
Shane Shell and
Reid Lindsay notched assists on the goal. Aquaro extended Hobart's lead to two goals with his first collegiate tally. He deked around a defender and wristed a shot from the slot into the upper right corner of the cage.
Cooper Swift and Alexander were credited with assists on the goal. Crane's first collegiate goal gave Hobart a 4-1 lead at the 11-minute mark. He jumped on a rebound and fired a shot into the back of the net. Alexeev and Mulhearn were credited with assists on the goal.
With under six minutes left in the second period, Jamie Dorsey was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct. Hobart made him pay, scoring four goals on the ensuing power play. Tyson got the party started, wristing a shot from the left faceoff circle into the upper left corner of the goal. Maguyon and
Blake Coffey were credited with assists on the goal. Two minutes later, Aquaro stuffed home a wrap-around attempt for his second goal of the game. Mourar and
Kevin Lassman were awarded assists on the goal. Maguyon banged home a rebound for his first goal of the season at the 16:01 mark of the period. Tyson and Artem Buzovera were awarded assists. Crane closed out the power play with a nifty shot from the right faceoff circle. His second goal of the game was assisted by Mulhearn and Lassman.
Crane completed his hat trick seven minutes into the third period.
Mateo Albinati and Coffey picked up the assists. Niko Happo rounded out the scoring for Manhattanville with an unassisted goal.
Hobart finished the game with a 60-12 edge in shots on goal. The Statesmen were 4-for-9 on the power play and The Valiants were 0-for-3 with the extra attacker.
Hobart will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 5, when it opens NEHC play against Southern Maine. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Portland, Maine.
