ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The sixth-ranked William Smith College soccer team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Nazareth in a non-conference contest at Golden Flyer Stadium this afternoon. With their eighth straight win, the Herons are now 9-1-1 on the season.
Three different players scored for the Herons.
Amanda Kesler started and played all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith, making four saves as she notched her fourth shutout of the season. It was the Herons' seventh consecutive shutout.
Annika Monfort played all 90 minutes in goal for the Golden Flyers (3-5-3). She made a career-high 18 saves.
Geena Morotti registered the game's first scoring chance in the fifth minute, but her attempt from the top of the 18-yard box was smothered by Kesler.
Julia Berg opened the scoring for William Smith in the 19th minute. She ran onto the end of a crossing pass from
Sheila McQuillen and buried a shot in the lower right corner of the cage. It was Berg's third tally of the season.
Sarah Gray extended William Smith's lead to 2-0 with her fourth goal of the season.
Julie Medina was credited with an assist on the goal. Medina picked up a bouncing ball in the box and slid a pass to Gray, who fired a shot past Monfort.
William Smith finished the first half with a 12-3 edge in shots.
The Herons continued to apply the pressure in the second half.
Amanda Adams had a pair of chances in the first five minutes, but Monfort kept her off the scoreboard. In the 62nd minute,
Julia Keogh nearly notched her 10th goal of the season, but her shot that was ticketed for the upper left corner of the cage was punched over the crossbar by Monfort.
Janne Knieke added an insurance goal for William Smith in the 82nd minute. She blasted a shot from 20-yards out into the back of the net.
The Herons dominated the stat sheet, compiling a 28-7 edge in shots on goal and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
William Smith returns home on Saturday, Oct. 9, when it welcomes Clarkson to Cozzens Field. The Liberty League contest is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
