McQuillen, Herons soar past Golden Knights 3-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—Sheila McQuillen scored a pair of second half goals to guide the sixth-ranked William Smith College soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Clarkson in a Liberty League contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With their ninth straight victory, the Herons are now 10-1-1 overall this season and 5-0-0 in the Liberty League.

Amanda Kesler started and played all 90 minutes in goal making three saves. It was her fifth shutout of the season and extended William Smith's shutout streak to eight games.

Molly DiCaprio played all 90 minutes in goal for the Golden Knights (3-5-2, 1-2-2). She made eight saves.

Merilyn Hinrichs nearly opened the scoring in the seventh minute, but her knuckling shot was punched over the cross bar by DiCaprio. In the 19th minute, DiCaprio made a diving save on a shot from Hinrichs. William Smith broke through in the 25th minute. McQuillen was taken down in the box by Delaney Holohan, and the Herons were awarded a penalty kick. Julia Keogh stepped up and buried the attempt inside the right goal post. It was her team leading 10th goal of the season. Ireland Krawczyk nearly doubled the Herons' lead, but her shot from 20-yards out was stopped by DiCaprio.

Clarkson's best chance of the game came in the 35th minute off the foot of Tonia Kousmanidis. Her shot from just inside the 18-yard box was smothered by Kesler.

McQuillen's first goal of the game in the 66th minute. She collected a pass from Ava Ruppersberger, dribbled the ball into the 18-yard box and ripped a shot into the upper right corner of the cage. McQuillen added a second goal in the 85th minute. She ran onto a crossing pass from Amanda Adams and one-touched a shot into the back of the net. The goals were McQuillen's fifth and sixth tallies of the season, respectively.

William Smith finished the game with a 17-4 edge in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Herons will be back in action Friday, Oct. 15, when it welcomes Union to Cozzens Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
