Cortland clips #4 Hobart 2-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—The fourth-ranked Hobart College hockey team was edged by Cortland 2-1 in a non-conference contest by Cortland at The Cooler this afternoon. The Statesmen are now 4-1-1 on the season.

PA Martineau opened the scoring 33 seconds into the game. He banged home a rebound from directly in front of the cage. Chase Bell and Griffen Sanom were credited with assists on the goal. Hobart appeared to take a 2-0 lead seven minutes in, but the goal was waved off due to goalie interference. The Statesmen controlled the tempo in the first period, outshooting Cortland 15-7.

The Red Dragons (3-2-0) tied the game 30 seconds into the second period. Cameron Knowlton redirected a Liam Anderson shot past Halstrom. It was his third goal of the season. Nate Berke also notched an assist on the game-tying goal. Hobart had its chances in the closing stages of the second period but they could not sneak another shot past Luca Durante.

Trevor Veneklase scored the game-winning goal 3:14 into the third period. He raced down the right wing and tucked a backhanded shot past Joe Halstrom. His second goal of the season was assisted by Jacob Gaydos.

The Statesmen had a chance to tie the game when Knowlton was whistled for a five-minute major. The Statesmen had six shots during the man advantage, but could not get the puck across the goal line.

Hobart finished the game with a 30-20 edge in shots on goal. Neither team was able to convert on their power plays. The Statesmen were 0-for-3 and the Red Dragons were 0-for-5
