#6 Hobart surges past #15 UMass Boston 8-4

GENEVA, N.Y.—The sixth-ranked Hobart College hockey team scored five second period goals as it raced past 15th-ranked UMass Boston in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this evening. Tonight's game was the second time this season that the Statesmen scored five or more goals in a period.
 
Hobart (5-1-1, 2-0-1) was led by Aaron Maguyon, who had two goals. Jonah Alexander added three assists in the victory. In total, seven different Statesmen recorded a point. Liam Lascelle started and played the opening 20 minutes in goal. He made six saves. Joe Halstrom came on in relief and made 18 saves as he earned the victory.
 
The Beacons (4-2-0, 3-1-0) were led by Chris Peters, who recorded a pair of assists in the losing effort. Four different players scored a goal for UMass Boston. Sam Best started in goal and made 14 saves in 40 minutes of action. Connor McAnanama made eight saves in the third period.
 
The first period was tightly contested with Hobart emerging with a 12-9 edge in shots on goal. The Beacons, however, emerged from the opening 20 minutes with a 3-2 lead. The Statesmen opened the scoring at the 10:16 mark of the first period. Austin Mourar fired a shot from the point past Best for his second goal of the season. Cooper Swift and Alexander were awarded assists on the goal. One minute later, UMass Boston tied the game on Jeffrey Skinner's third goal of the season. He redirected a Michael Krupinski shot from the point past Lascelle. The Beacons took a 2-1 lead at the 16:05 mark of the period on Kolye Bankauskas' first goal of the season. He raced down the left wing and slipped a shot between the left goalpost and Lascelle's blocker. Gino Carabelli was credited with an assist on the goal. Seventy-one seconds later, Maguyon made it 2-2 with his third goal of the season. Tyson and Mourar notched assists on the tally. With 28 seconds remaining in the first period Andy Walker gave UMass Boston a 3-2 lead. His power-play goal was assisted by Chris Peters and Joe Petruzzella.
 
Hobart came out of the first intermission and immediately swung momentum in their favor. Luke Aquaro cleaned up a loose puck in the slot for his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Gagik Malakyan and Alexander were credited with assists on the goal. Just over three minutes later, Jake Gresh pocketed his first goal of the season. He snapped a one-timer past Best. Aquaro and Alexander were credited with assists on the shorthanded goal. Maguyon scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal at the 13:08 mark of the second period. He redirected a Blake Coffey shot over the goal line. Tyson was credited with the secondary assist on the goal. One minute later, Dan Sliney extended Hobart's lead to 6-3. His fourth goal of the season was assisted by Mark Benemerito. Gagik Malakyan rounded out the second period scoring with his first collegiate goal. His power-play goal was assisted by Reid Lindsay and Artem Buzoverya.
 
Three minutes into the third period, Alex Duncan notched a power-play goal to cut into Hobart's lead. He redirected a shot from Chris Peters past Halstrom. Evan Rochowiak also had an assist. Benemerito wrapped up the scoring with his second goal of the season. Kevin Lassman and Chase Bell notched assists on the goal.
 
Hobart finished the game with a 30-28 edge in shots on goal. Hobart was 3-for-7 on the power play and UMass Boston was 2-for-6 with the extra attacker.
 
Hobart will be back in action tomorrow, Nov. 20, when it welcomes Johnson & Wales to The Cooler. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
