PINE VALLEY, N.Y.—The fifth-ranked Elmira College hockey team erupted for six goals in the second period as they cruised to a 10-0 victory over William Smith in a New England Hockey Conference contest at the Murray Athletic Center this afternoon. The Herons are now 2-4-0 overall and 1-3-0 in NEHC play to start the season.
Eliza Beaudin led the way for the Soaring Eagles (5-0-0), recording five points on four goals and an assist. Morgan Mordini factored into six of the ten goals finishing the night with six points (1g, 5a). Madi Morton (2a) and Erika Goleniak (2a) also had multi-point games in the victory. Leonie-Louise Kuehberger started and made 10 saves in 40 minutes of work. Alayna Breivogel made 10 saves in the third period.
All three goalies saw action for William Smith.
Amanda Aalto started and made seven saves in 26:28 minutes in goal.
Erin Murray made seven saves in just under seven minutes of action and
Annie Hauser made nine saves in 26:50 minutes.
Beaudin opened the scoring at the 7:41 mark of the first period She fired a shot from the right faceoff circle past Aalto. Mordini was credited with an assist on the goal. Mordini doubled the lead two minutes later off a feed from Beaudin and Sydney Harris. It was a shorthanded goal. William Smith had a flurry of chances in the middle stages of the period but could not convert.
Elmira broke the game open with a three-goal surge in the first seven minutes of the second period. Kelly Millins, Jenny Heath and Beaudin scored during a two-minute span. Beaudin completed her hat trick at the 9:26 mark of the second period. Morton and Mordini were credited with assists on the goal. Claire Meeder and Beaudin wrapped up the second period's scoring, netting goals 11 seconds apart.
Claire Elfring and Holly Riva scored in the third period for Elmira.
The Soaring Eagles finished the game with a 33-20 edge in shots on goal. Elmira was 2-for-2 on the power play and William Smith was 0-for-7 with the extra skater.
The Herons will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 19, when they head to Boston to take on UMass Boston in a NEHC. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
