GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team shot 54% from the floor and nearly 80% from the free throw line in an 88-60 non-conference victory over New York University in Bristol Gym this afternoon. The Statesmen improved to 3-2 on the young season while handing the Violets their first loss, dropping the visitors to 4-1.
Forward
Jackson Meshanic led Hobart with his third consecutive double-double. He shot 5-of-7 from the floor and made all eight of his free throws for a game-high 18 points and shared game-high honors with 11 boards. He was joined in double figures by
Patrick Walker,
Aidan Rodgers and
Carter Meshanic who each finished with 11 points.
The Statesmen held NYU to 28.6% shooting from the field. Riley Demps was the Violets' leading scorer with eight points.
NYU's prospects looked bright early in the contest as they built a 12-5 lead. The Violets drained back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers by Zay Freeney, Nick Macarchuk and Jacob Sussman to go up 12-5 four minutes into the game.
Hobart fought back with a 24-4 run that put them in the lead for good. The surge, which included seven points from
Pat Healy, saw the Statesmen go 9-of-13 from the floor while NYU went 1-of-17. When it was over, Hobart had a comfortable 29-16 lead with about four minutes left in the first half. The Statesmen maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the half, going into the locker room with a 39-24 lead.
Jackson Meshanic led all scorers with nine points at the intermission.
The second half was all Hobart as the home team never let its lead dip below a dozen—39-27 on a free throw by Bobby Hawkinson just over a minute in. Over the next four minutes, the Statesmen outscored their guests 12-4 for a 51-31 lead. Demps stopped the run with a traditional 3-point play to make it a 17-point game, but
Jackson Meshanic made an old fashion 3-point play of his own to restore the 20-point advantage and Hobart never let the Violets get closer for the remainder of the contest.
A foul-fest, Hobart and NYU were whistled for a combined 56 fouls. The Statesmen went 31-of-39 at the line and the Violets were 22-of-30.
Turnovers were nearly even—Hobart had 16, NYU 15—but the Statesmen made the most of the Violets' miscues, outscoring them 22-12 in points off turnovers. Hobart also enjoyed a 40-18 advantage in the paint.
The Statesmen will be back in action at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23 when they visit the University of Rochester. NYU will take on Maritime College also on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
