Late Heron comeback falls short vs. Golden Eagles

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team had four players reach double figures, including a game-high 19 points from forward Brooke Jarvis, but SUNY Brockport eked out a 66-61 victory in Bristol Gym this afternoon.
 
Jarvis was 6-of-18 shooting and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. She also grabbed seven rebounds and made three steals. Forwards Olivia Parisi and Lauren DeVaney each finished with a double-double on 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Guard Molly Walsh added 11 points off the bench for the Herons (1-1).
 
Forward Erin Nolan paced the Golden Eagles (4-0) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Guard Chelsea Henry scored 16 points, including an 8-for-8 effort at the line. Guard Anna Felice chipped in 14 points, including a game-high four 3-pointers. Molly Mahony handed out a game-high five assists.
 
Bolstered by a 61.1% shooting effort in the third quarter, Brockport shot 39.3% for the game. William Smith shot 29.2%, including a 46.2% clip in the fourth quarter during their ill-fated comeback.
 
The Herons came out of the first quarter with a 10-8 lead, but Brockport started the second quarter on an 8-0 run to take the upper hand. William Smith trailed by as many as eight in the second frame, but the Herons reclaimed the lead with an 11-2 run that included five points from Jarvis. Christina Mitrow's 3-pointer with two and a half minutes left in the half gave the home team a 28-27 lead.
 
The Golden Eagles surged back in front by halftime, scoring the final eight points of the half. Felice sank a pair of triples in the finishing run. She led all scorers with 12 points at the break.
 
William Smith got within three in the third quarter and headed to the fourth quarter having narrowed its deficit to four, 49-45. Walsh drained a 3-pointer with 1:46 to go, cutting Brockport's advantage to just one, 59-58. The Golden Eagles put the game away at the free throw line, making 7-of-8.
 
The Herons will be back in action at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, when they visit the University of Rochester. Brockport also plays at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, hosting RIT.
