Post play leads William Smith to win over Keuka

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team dominated the paint in a 98-54 win over Keuka College in the season opening game for both teams tonight. The frontcourt trio of Olivia Parisi, Lauren DeVaney and Brooke Jarvis combined for 67 points and 29 rebounds to lead the Herons.
 
Parisi and DeVaney both recorded double-doubles. Parisi was 11-of-22 shooting, finishing with a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds. DeVaney was 10-of-16 shooting and had 24 points and a game-high 12 boards. Jarvis logged 18 points and six boards in her collegiate debut. Guard Kerstin Kelly also reached double digits for William Smith, making 5-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc on her way to a career-high 17 points.
 
William Smith outscored Keuka 58-12 in the paint. The Herons also enjoyed a 58-42 advantage on the glass.
 
The Wolves' Amelia Poole led the visitors with 10 points. Meaghan McGwin added nine points and a team-high six rebounds.
 
The outcome turned on an eight-minute stretch, spanning the first and second quarters that saw William Smith go on a 23-0 run. With about three and a half minutes left in the opening quarter, Keuka's Lauren Hill made a driving layup, cutting William Smith's lead to 19-13. The Wolves didn't score another point until less than five minutes remained in the half, missing 14 straight shots from the floor, including 11 3-pointers.
 
On the other side of the ledger, the Herons were 8-of-17 shooting, ballooning their lead to 42-13 just past the midway point of the second quarter. Parisi led the surge with eight points.
 
Keuka scored the next five points, but William Smith ended the half on 10-4 run, carrying a 52-22 lead into halftime. The Herons shot 61.1% (11-18) from the floor in the second quarter and 46.3% for the game.
 
William Smith never let its lead slip below its 30-point halftime margin, leading by as many as 52.
 
The Herons will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 20, when they host Brockport at 4 p.m. in Bristol Gym.
