The Hobart College hockey team made a triumphant return to the ice, defeating Lebanon Valley College 5-1 in an exhibition game at The Cooler. The Statesmen, who played their first intercollegiate opponent in over a year, broke the contest open with a three-goal outburst in the second period.
Because it is an exhibition game, all stats are unofficial, but
Jake Gresh,
Aaron Maguyon and
Zach Tyson all recorded a goal and an assist for Hobart. The goalie trio of
Garrett McGowan,
Liam Lascelle and
Joe Halstrom combined for 19 saves for the Statesmen.
Â
After a scoreless first period,
Ryan Lynch needed less than a minute to open the scoring. Lynch redirected a shot from the point by
TJ Schultz, that effort was blocked in front, but the rebound came back to Lynch, who fired a shot into the upper right corner for a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Tyson went top shelf from the left faceoff dot. Gresh and Maguyon assisted on the goal. Midway through the period, Hobart took a 3-0 lead on Gresh's blistering slapshot from the point.
Mike Faulkner and
Artem Buzoverya earned the assists.
Â
Just over seven minutes into the third period,
Chase Bell added a power-play goal to extend the lead to 4-0. He skated into the zone and wristed a shot on goal that goalie Gabriel Pigeon appeared to stop, but the puck trickled past him over the goal line. The Dutchmen broke up the shutout at the 9:53 mark, but Maguyon got the goal back just 18 seconds later.
