Herons rally past Tigers

GENEVA, N.Y. — The William Smith College soccer team scored three second half goals as it rallied to beat RIT 3-1 in an exhibition match on Cozzens Field this afternoon. It was the Herons first intercollegiate action since the 2019 National Championship Game, 498 days ago.

Senior Amanda Adams scored twice and senior Sheila McQuillen added a pair of assists in the victory. Junior Justine Pearson and first-year Kirsten Nelson each played 40 minutes in goal and each had one save.

Jessica Gomez scored for the Tigers. Alyssa Salls played all 80 minutes in goal and made three saves.

Gomez opened the scoring for the Tigers, converting on a free kick from outside the box. Despite not finding the back of the net, William Smith out shot RIT 5-2 in the opening 40 minutes.

Adams tied the game seven minutes into the second half. She collected her own rebound, spun a defender and chipped the shot over the goalie. Twenty-eight minutes later senior Julia Keogh scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal, heading home a pass from McQuillen. Adams rounded out the scoring two minutes later. McQuillen was credited with an assist on the goal.

With it being an exhibition game, the teams tacked on an additional 30 minutes after regulation. First-year Ava Ruppersberger netted a goal for William Smith in the extra session.

The Herons finished with a 14-3 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

William Smith will be back in action on Friday, April 23.
