GENEVA, N.Y. — The Hobart College tennis team defeated Ithaca 7-2 in a Liberty League match this afternoon. With the win, the Statesmen are now 5-1 overall this season and 4-1 in conference play.
Today's match started on the outdoor courts at the HWS Tennis Center but were moved to the indoor courts at Bristol Field House when a line of storms moved through the area.
Hobart took a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play. Senior
Walker Anderson and sophomore
Jett Wright won their fifth straight match in the No. 1 spot, knocking off Deon Kraft and Eric Dubilirer 8-6. Anderson and Wright are 5-1 this season. Senior
Jeremy Atwater and first-year
Winter Fagerberg bested Jacob Wachs and Anthony Villella, 8-4, in the No. 2 spot. Atwater and Fagerberg have won three-straight matches since moving up to the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Ithaca (3-4, 1-4) earned their doubles point with an 8-6 win in the No. 3 spot.
Fagerberg remained unbeaten this season, topping Artem Khaybullin 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 4 spot. Fagerberg is 6-0 in singles play and has yet to lose a set in his collegiate career. Hobart extended its lead to 4-1 thanks to junior
Thomas Shung's straight sets win in the No. 3 spot. He knocked off Deon Kraft 6-3, 6-4. Shung is 4-2 in singles play this year. Anderson clinched the overall victory for the Statesmen with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win in the No. 1 spot. Wright and sophomore
Guthrie Speers also won in straight sets in the fifth and sixth spot, respectively. Wright beat Jacob Wachs for his fifth win of the season, and Speers defeated Villella for his fourth.
Nicolas Luis edged Atwater in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, to collect Ithaca's singles point.
Hobart will be back in action on Thursday, April 29, when they welcome Rensselaer to Geneva. Weather permitting, the match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
