GENEVA, N.Y. — Hobart College first-year
Frederick Madsen's goal in the 65th minute lifted the Hobart College soccer team past Keuka 1-0 in a non-conference contest on Boswell Field at David J Urick Stadium this evening. It was the season opener for both teams.
Hobart (1-0-0) dominated the game, finishing with a 16-0 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Statesmen controlled the time of possession in the first half, pinning Keuka in its own half of the field. Sophomore
Matias Valenzuela Matic had an opportunity in the 15th minute but his shot was smothered by Cory Cangemi. Senior
Nick Kriak also had a shot blocked in the opening 45 minutes.
Hobart nearly opened the scoring in the 57th minute off a shot from Valenzuela Matic. A Keuka defender stopped the ball in the box with his hand and was shown a red card. On the ensuing penalty kick, Cangemi guessed correctly and robbed Valenzuela Matic of his first collegiate goal.
Madsen opened the scoring 10 minutes later. He buried a shot from just inside the 18-yard box into the lower right-hand corner of cage. Valenzuela Matic was credited with an assist on the goal.
Junior
Robbie Caron had a pair of opportunities in the 75th minute turned aside by the Wolves' defense.
Junior
Christian Burkhart and sophomore
Guillermo Castaneda Chang each played 45 minutes in Hobart's goal.
The Statesmen will be back in action this weekend, Sept. 4-5, when it heads to New Hampshire for the 2021 Keene State/Home Depot Soccer Classic. Hobart will open the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 4, against Brandeis. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
